Nature
Entire valleys have conserved their natural surroundings,
rivers, torrents, splendid views and variety of settings.
The Pian di Spagna is so-called from the period of Spanish
rule. It is a vast wetland, established in 1985 by the Regional
Authorities.
It is situated at the end of the Valtellina and Valchiavenna
valley-canals in an area which constitutes an obligatory stage for
the flocks of migrating birds which fly from the high northern
peaks towards Africa.
It is so easy and exciting to watch grey herons, grebes, wild
ducks and swans, some nesting and some errant from the iced-up
Swiss lakes.
The wildlife is numerous and varied, from chamois in the Pizzo
di Gino area, to deer, roe and marmots.
From Gravedona towards the mountain another very important and
fascinating valley is reached. The Valle di Livo was in past
centuries rich in produce and pastern.
This territory preserves an absolutely unique and amazing artistic
heritage made up of votive frescos on the walls of churches and
stone buildings, traditions, customs and dialects which are
preserved and passed down to future generations.
